My students need items to set up life in a college dorm. They have worked hard to overcome multiple barriers, including being homeless. These items will help them get started on a new chapter of life.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"I got in!", "I did it!", "This is the school of my dreams!" These are the things students at my school exclaim when they read their college admissions letters. The college admissions letter represents an opportunity students have worked to create for themselves for years. Parents, teachers, and counselors have supported the students working towards this goal, but it is their sense of determination that is remarkable.
As the students see their hard work paying off with admission letters, the next problem begins to emerge - having supplies for living in a dorm room.
A number of our college-bound seniors are registered in our Families In Transition (FIT) program, meaning their family meets the federal guidelines for homelessness. Colleges will waive various fees for students registered in this program and scholarships will help cover tuition. Students in the FIT program struggle to cover other expenses, such as purchasing items for living in a dorm room.
My Project
REL High School's senior class has worked hard to exceed expectations. They have a strong chance to beat the previous class' graduation rate, college admissions, and scholarship award amount. Last year's class was awarded over $2 million in scholarships. This year's class has almost $5 million in awards!
Despite all of their hard work, some obstacles still loom on the horizon!
Some of our college-bound students are considered homeless and need assistance with personal items for their dorm. This project will allow their REL family to send them to college with a suitcase filled with dorm room essentials.
