My Students

I teach 11-12 year old students, who come from all different types of backgrounds, in an urban middle school. I want to be able to provide these students with the necessary materials to begin the school year on the right foot. Many of my students would not be able to obtain these things without help.

My students are creative and enthusiastic while in the classroom.

They are strong-willed and passionate about many things, so organization is an important skill that we work on in the beginning of middle school. Starting off the year with these materials will introduce them to good organization habits. I'd like to help my students apply these habits so they can carry them with them in the future.

My Project

As much as I love my classroom library, it's important to keep adding titles that the students are invested in. The students will keep reading as long as we have titles they want to read. That's why it's important to add the books they love. When students find a series or genre they're interested in, they go directly to reading and talking about their books. It's one of the coolest thing to see them lead on their own.

The other thing we desperately need are notebooks.

We've been working hard to focus on our writing skills and to get more comfortable with the writing process but it takes a lot of organization. My goal is to allow students to have a new notebook in order to keep it all straight.
