"Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted." Dr. Seuss said it beautifully. Our class goal is to learn and grow, but to do so in a way that allows the students to be challenged and entertained at the same time.
Each day, my students are encouraged to be the best students and people they can be.
We have goals for the year that the students are excited about, but they have so many things stacked against them. We are located in a 'not so old' school in one of the most poverty stricken areas in Miami-Dade. Outside of school, my students see and experience things that no child should ever have to witness. However, in spite of this, they come to school excited to learn and ready to try anything. They have big goals for the year, including getting on-level when it comes to math and reading. I want to create a classroom environment for them that is welcoming, engaging, and exciting. We have a lot of obstacles to overcome, but my students are ready to take on the challenge despite coming in with many deficiencies. We believe we can do it with the right resources.
My Project
My students need math and reading games and centers, headphones, and science, fairy tale, picture book and chapter book read-along books. The materials I'm requesting will allow the students to work with hands-on, exciting materials in reading and math. My goal is to be able to break the class into small groups that can work with certain materials until they become "experts" in a skill. The centers and games that I am requesting will allow the students to grow in areas such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, and basic math skills. The games will keep the students excited and engaged throughout the class, and can make learning math and reading fun for them.
I am also requesting a listening center and headphones for the students. Although they are in third grade, many of my students are 2-3 years behind in reading. The listening center will allow these students to "read" the same books that their classmates are reading without having to struggle. This will benefit class discussions and allow them to feel successful.
The math and reading centers will be used daily to encourage the students' success.
In the state of Florida, students may be held back up to 2 years if they do not pass the end of the year tests.
The stakes are high for these kids, although they are only 8 years old. The odds are stacked against them, and they have a large achievement gap to overcome. The frustration of being so far behind is sure to affect their confidence and drive this school year if they can't find the resources to be successful and have fun. Please help change their futures by providing these resources.
