Successful Sensory Superstars

My Project

Our school is a PK-6 grade school. We have a special education program, a day treatment program, and a special purpose school for students with autism within our school community. We also have a diverse population of students with a higher average than the majority of schools in Maine. With such an array of special needs in our school and not a fully staffed school we would benefit from some additional tools and strategies to help our students who struggle with social emotional skills, self regulation, body awareness, impulsivity, motor planning, sensory seeking, attention and much more.

We would benefit from a sensory pathway that would meet the needs of all children at the school, not just students who have an IEP or 504 plan.

Currently we have a small OT room that has tools to help students who are identified with an IEP, students that have 504 plans, or students that have been identified through our MTSS team as needing accommodations. We have so many students that would benefit from a sensory break during their day to help organize their brains and help them to be more independent learners.

A sensory pathway could help students engage more with their peers and staff, initiate and sustain working in their classroom setting, help them to be more independent with self regulation skills. It can also help with motor planning, balance and coordination, crossing their midline, and strength.

I would be grateful for the help to create a sensory pathway within the hallways of the school and create a positive learning environment for all of the students at McMahon Elementary School.
