Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students live in a culturally diverse community that is identified as high poverty. The students in our classroom are aged 3-5 and identified as special needs. We service a variety of children with disabilities, including Autism, Down's Syndrome, Physically Impaired, Health Impaired, and Speech & Language Impairment. They attend school 4 days a week, 3 hours a day. All of the children in the class have Individualized Education Programs, which mean that we focus on a range of needs. In addition to academics and self-help skills, I believe we are preparing these young children to be good citizens. I take great pride in teaching them how to learn, how to be a good friend, and how to make the most of their individual potential.
My Project
Preschool students need a variety of seating options to fully participate and attend to literacy and music activities. These ball and bean bag chairs will benefit the students during table-top activities, speech therapy, and learning centers because they provide support for sitting and moving. Many of our students have Autism and sensory processing issues, and we are constantly looking for new ways to accommodate their learning styles. When we have a variety of seating choices available, we can try different options to individualize each student's learning. In my almost 20 years of teaching experience, I have learned that preschoolers need to move and fidget in order to learn best. These chairs will provide them with the individualized attention they need to succeed!
