Do you remember trying to sit still in your classroom chair all day? I look back fondly on my time in school, but remember craving the opportunity to have more of a choice as to where I could learn.
I have a curious set of diverse students who are eager to learn and explore new topics, but have a hard time sitting still .
Unfortunately, disengagement has also become something of a common denominator across our school district over the last few years, and more than half of students in our school are from low-income families. We have found that starting as early as elementary school, it has become increasingly difficult to get children to school on a regular basis. Many of my students are attending less than 85% of school days. In spite of this, the students' energy inspires me to create meaningful and memorable lessons across the curriculum.
My Project
There are many benefits to flexible seating in the classroom. Flexible seating gives students the choice. It empowers the students to control their learning environment. During independent work time, students have the opportunity to choose to work in various locations.
My students love to move and do not fit into the one size fits all seats we have now.
They need the opportunity for choice and I want to encourage them to be comfortable with their peers to learn and be engaged together. In a world where kids have little control, allowing them to pick where they work makes them so happy and helps motivate them to do all of their work to the best of their abilities. These balance ball seats will be the perfect addition to our classroom!
