Our school is a therapeutic day school program the task of which is to provide emotional support and academic opportunities to children who have been unable to succeed in community school settings due to emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties.
The majority of our students live at a residential children's home and are wards of the state.
Our school runs as a trauma-informed program, aiming to help our students grow from their pasts and learn how to cope in effective ways.
Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredible children. Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming and safe community and to help my students explore learning and grow into independent and productive citizens.
My Project
Guided Reading is a research based practice to help students improve their reading skills in specific areas and help them grow in reading. The Teachers Pay Teachers materials we are requesting were designed specifically for teachers by a highly esteemed reading specialist!
Guided Reading will help my struggling readers AND my excelling readers grow in their literacy knowledge.
Currently, I do not have the materials to really help me help my students. Our guided reading groups are slacking and I need the right stuff to keep my kids engaged and moving up their reading levels.
The materials we requested are Guided Reading passages and activities both for my lower level students and for my excelling students. I also requested visual posters for memorizing letter sounds and blends and pictures to encourage inferencing. The pictures offer a fun and engaging prompt for writing--a subject my students usually hate! Lastly, we are also needing to work on fluency. A yearlong set of monthly poems will really help not only motivate my students but increase their fluency in reading.
