Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
They just want education to be fun. Instead we spend countless hours writing down problems in workbooks and worksheets, and I only get a chance to look at a few each day. Whiteboards would allow me to instantly see who needs help, and who is ready to go on without destroying a forest in the process.
My students are second language learners who live in a depressed neighborhood.
Their parents are working two jobs to make ends meet, or they are out looking for jobs that don't exist anymore. Parents keep them inside where it is safe, and they don't have to worry about them. Despite that, they are thirsty for an education. I just want them to know that there is more to learning than filling out a worksheet.
My Project
My students need basic materials such as white board markers, a pencil sharpener, and paint brushes, to make education more engaging. If every student has a dry erase marker for their whiteboards, I can put up a math problem and have them solve it all together. I will be able so see right away who needs help and who needs a challenge. Students will be able to share in groups how they solved it, explain what they did, and prove that they have the right answer. They can use them in math competitions. They can bring them to workshop, and I can help them to figure out what is wrong with their answers. Most importantly, they will not have to spend time writing in a journal that they will never look at again.
My students need different ways to show their knowledge.
It can be with a pencil and paper, dry erase marker and whiteboard, or with paint and a canvas. The more I can tap into their multiple learning styles of my students, the more effective I can be as a teacher.
