Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was a child, I was thrilled to receive a collection of books with 45 rpm records that allowed me to hear a story & follow along. It gave me such a sense of independence. My daughter had a similar collection with cassette tapes. Now it's all about the LeapFrog Leapster2 System.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Aside from the 3-4 adult-led activities, my classroom has 15 independent centers that change with each new theme. It's almost time for Kindergarten & I'd like my students to move on with every advantage. They've been diligently learning the letters of the alphabet & their corresponding sounds. Quite a few students can identify the first letter/sound of many words. Some are beginning to recognize sight words and even spell! I'm being asked, "What does this say?" and "How do you spell ___?" Those questions are music to my ears and I'm happy to respond. I'd like something they can use independently, too.

My Project

With 2 LeapFrog Leapster2 Systems, carrying cases and 8 different games my students will be able to access literature independently while practicing literacy and phonemic awareness. They will be particularly useful for my English Language Learners because of the emphasis on vocabulary development. The LeapFrog Leapster2's are interactive and will capture the children's attention with popular characters they enjoy. The Leapsters' portability will allow students to choose their work area: at a table, on the carpet, or even a comfy chair in one of our reading corners. The Leapsters will help the children learn concepts of print such as left to right & tracking skills. Students can listen to the stories and target words they want to hear. The Leapsters are also versatile because children may work alone or with a partner.

As my students prepare for the transition to Kindergarten, they are both excited and overwhelmed.

The LeapFrog Leapster2 System will provide an opportunity to practice essential literacy & English skills while giving them a great sense of accomplishment that will ensure success in Kindergarten and beyond. The high-interest stories and favorite characters will keep them coming back for more!
