This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a 2nd-grade special education classroom and we are full of love and charismatic personalities! My students laugh, play, care, and give to one another with every moment that they can. However, my students face many adverse circumstances, they live in shelters, city housing developments, and foster care. Most of my students come to school hungry and without proper sized clothing or school supplies. Most of our scholars read, write, and compute at a kindergarten level.
Our 2nd-grade students are living in a very traumatic time and above all are encountering many hardships here in New York City.
My students find school as a safe place to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
This coming school year, our scholars will continue distance learning in some form and I can already foresee their resilience. My future scholars are currently in 1st grade and will be entering 2nd grade in September and they have shown bravery with their first-grade teachers. Currently, the scholars were only given an iPad or a laptop to work from home with. They receive 4 daily check-ins just to promote socio-emotional support to the scholars and their families during this time.
My Project
A stylus pen will be extremely helpful for my students! There are so many benefits to using a stylus during digital and remote learning. Currently, my students use their fingers to write out their sentences and it is quite difficult for them to write clearly. There are many benefits to using a stylus pen on an iPad.
This tool will help my students practice using gross motor skills to digital write nice, neat, and clean!
It will also help them practice their handwriting skills the proper way in which is similar to a pencil/pen. Learning how to write correctly is a focus for my second graders, especially at such an early age. This will allow my students to write expressively by eliminating frustrations while working on an iPad to complete their daily assignments.
Most of my students are of special needs and lack the necessary skills to hold pencils correctly, and so using a finger to write will only prolong their needs, rather than progress their needs in a positive manner.
