Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a theatre teacher in inner-city Queens. Most of my students are English language learners. Most of my students come from low income families. 100% of the students qualify for free lunches and breakfast through the school. Despite this, parents are very involved in the culture of the school. We have numerous parent engagement events and parents are very involved in PTA.
Despite challenging home lives, they are eager to learn and excited about all activities that I give them.
They have limited resources at home so are very appreciative and thankful for opportunities they are given at school.
Most of my students have never seen a play outside of school before and have limited accessibility to professional arts and cultural organizations. Because of this and their limited English, I really have to start from scratch when teaching them about theatre.
My Project
The costume pieces will really help our production of "A Midsummer Night Dream" come alive for the students. Most of my students have never been in a play before and are so excited to be performing this 5th grade play to end their elementary school experience.
I know that these costumes will give them the confidence they need to fully embody their characters.
The legging and tutus will make the fairies feel magical. The suspenders and hats will give the Mechanicals that kick of comedy they need. The vests and ties will make the Athenians stand tall and walk as the royalty they are.
The costumes will also help the parents, who many have limited English themselves, identify and understand the complex character relationships of this Shakespearean play.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
