Stuffed Animal Sewing Project

My students need supplies to make stuffed animals for our sewing unit in FACS. My students will learn how to hand-sew, including sewing buttons for eyes!

My Students

This is the first year my school has had a Family and Consumer Science class in ten years. In Family and Consumer Science, my students will learn and practice many skills that will benefit them as they grow into fully-functioning adults, such as cooking, sewing, budgeting, and parenting skills.

My students are from urban, high-poverty areas of Minneapolis.

They bring with them lots of challenges and also lots of opportunity for growth and success. My students love hands-on projects, and they have been thrilled to be able to learn how to cook this fall and early winter. They are excited to begin other projects and learn new skills including how to knit and sew. The skills they learn in FACS this year, like cooking and sewing, will stay with them well after they have left my classroom.

My Project

The materials we need will allow my students to practice their hand-sewing skills by making a small stuffed animal. My students will have the option of using a pattern for a stuffed monkey, or create their own pattern. They will cut out the pattern in the felt, sew the sides together, sew on buttons for eyes, embroider a mouth and other facial features, and then stuff their stuffed animals. My students will learn fine-motor skills holding and using the sewing needle, they will learn problem-solving skills by troubleshooting any issues that come up, they will learn patience and control through the repetitive sewing motions, and they will learn basic sewing skills that will benefit them in their real lives, like being able to sew on a button.

This project will improve my classroom by allowing my students to get to work on a hands-on project with proper materials.

This will improve my students lives by giving them skills that transcend the classroom. This may spark a few students to consider careers that they may never have been exposed to had they not had the opportunity to try out a new skill.
