Studying Poetry in New Ways

My students need copies of "Brown Girl Dreaming" to study the sensory images and figurative language that Jacqueline Woodson uses to describe her experiences growing up during the Civil Rights Movement.

My Students

My students this year are extremely avid readers. I am constantly seeking new ways to challenge them! One of the most fulfilling aspects of reading is being able to share the experience of a story with our peers! This year in our 7th grade ALPS class, we have explored the concept "change." How and why do characters change? What makes us change as humans? How do we change others and the world around us?

As part of our "Complex Text" unit, I would like for my students to explore Jacqueline Woodson's memoir in verse: Brown Girl Dreaming.

Being able to analyze the figurative language and verse form of a nonfiction narrative will provide my students with a new lens with which to view this time period in history!

My Project

This novel, Brown Girl Dreaming, will provide my students a new outlook on both poetry and prose. They will be able to apply what they have learned about nonfiction and memoir to a book that we discuss together as a class.

Jacqueline Woodson's experiences will open my student's eyes to a time period in history that many of them are unfamiliar with.

We will read this memoir in addition to many of the Langston Hughes poems that inspired Woodson as a young girl. The students will be able to see parallels between their own lives and that of the protagonist, emulating her free verse style of writing at the end of the unit.
