Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Introduction to Multicultural Studies in the 21st century classroom is a place where high school students are given the opportunity to obtain college credit and are given an opportunity to explore different cultures. The students who are in the classroom are highly motivated, eager to learn, and strong critical thinkers. My students live in a vibrant immigrant neighborhood in the heart of Queens, NY and my class often becomes a place where they can share their experiences as immigrants and minorities.
My students are eager to engage with literary texts that relate to them.
They are excited when they can make a real world connection with the text and enjoy enthusiastically discussing the cultures found in the text as well as its literary aspects. They take pride in their work and ownership over their own learning.
My Project
In a semester, my students study literature from six separate cultures. Each culture is showcased by a text and Drown by Junot Diaz and Milk & Honey by Rupi Kaur will both be used to represent their respective cultures. These two texts are the texts that my students will probably most engage with this year as their cultures are represented in them. I have a large population of Dominican students and a large population of students who wish to write poetry.
Giving minority students access to texts that represent them will foster a love for literature in them.
I think it is important for students to see themselves in the literature that they read. Having these two books would ensure that my students feel represented in the classroom this semester.
