Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our children will need to be educated about the environment and environmental issues vastly more than previous generations. It will affect them on a daily basis, as well as in the future. With your help, I will continue to integrate environmental education into my chemistry curriculum.
My students come from incredible poverty and have had to deal with adversity their entire lives.
I work at a large urban high school in a major city in CA and have some of the most amazing, dedicated, eager to learn students I know! We have an amazing AP environmental studies class, and I teach the students the year before they have an opportunity to take this advanced class. By funding this project, you will not only help me teach environmental issues, but you will help me encourage my students to participate in an AP environmental class which will greatly help them prepare for college. The effect of this is more than you realize- because my students will be the first in their families to attend college.
My Project
The materials I have requested will not only help me integrate environmental issues into my curriculum but will help replace essential materials to my lab program-without which my students will not have access to laboratory exercises. The chromatography paper will help me show the students about dyes and solutions and how they affect the water quality of our planet. The water quality kits and pH paper will also help me show my students about water quality. The mole ball will help me reinforce key chemistry concepts about the mole to provide framework for the water quality issues we will discuss. I also hope to set up a fish tank in my classroom - and the test strips will support my students as they learn about the difference factors of water quality. The food analysis kits will allow us to discuss which foods affect the environment. The cartoon environmental book will allow me to show students issues on a daily basis and open the door for discussing those issues.
This project is really important because students need to be aware of the environmental issues facing their lives and how the daily decisions they make will affect the planet they call home.
Also, my population of students desperately needs all the support they can to compete will wealthier school districts and be competitive and ultimately successful at the college level. We can both help them get there. Thank you!
