Study of Electricity and Circuits

My students need 10 circuit boards from Vernier to help them understand concepts involving electricity and circuits.

My Students

Physics is one of the fields of science that requires hands on experimentation to understand the material. I am undertaking a renovation of the curriculum to involve more experiments and projects. By the end of the course, the students should have extensive experience in experimentation.

I teach in a public school in a low economically depressed area of the city.

The student body is 34% African American, 35% Hispanic, 21% white, 9% other. The school itself is small but caring. We strive to educate the students to the best of our ability and guide them through life as much as we can. The students enrolled in physics come from all walks of life and many are looking to go to college. Many of my students are the first in their family to go to college, so preparing them for college life is one of our main objectives.

My Project

The students will spend up to three weeks performing basic current and voltage measurements using these circuits boards. They will learn the relationship described by Ohm's law for circuits in parallel and series. They will also investigate how capacitors work.

The donators will provide more experimental experiences to my students.

My goals is to foster an appreciate for sciences in general and for physics in particular. With this change in my class and curriculum, I believe that more students will be ready to go to college, have an appreciation for science, or to enter a scientific field and excel in their endeavors to achieve their dreams.
