Students Zoom In On Learning With a Document Camera!

My students need a document camera to share their work in real time, in the classroom- because teaching others is the best way to learn!

My Students

Can a single student capture the attention of a class of 25 or more? Can she share how she solved a molarity problem? Or show others how to peal a small layer of skin from an onion to create a wet mount? With a document camera, everyone can see.

My diverse 9th and 10th grade students love sharing their work and their thinking about science.

They attend a pilot high school in Massachusetts with a focus on community leadership. In the spirit of community leadership, the students often work in groups or teach each other to help everyone learn. But, just reading their work aloud, or explaining their thinking to the class is often insufficient to reach the students who would gain more from SEEing it. We looked at onion cells under a microscope last week. One group was able to peel off a small enough layer of cells to see them clearly under the microscope, but the other groups couldn't quite get the hang of it. With a document camera, the experts could teach the class by showing them exactly what to do.

My Project

In my classes, we do a lot of scientific inquiry, hands on activities, and practicing the skills we have already learned. Sometimes when many students are struggling through the same problem, I ask the ones who've mastered it to teach other students. But transferring their work to transparencies or the white board takes too long. There must be another way! With a document camera, labs and demonstrations will instantly become easier. Students will be able to follow along through guided notes, and share their own work with the rest of the class. We will save time by not creating transparencies. Your donation will help my students become confident scientific thinkers and owners of their learning- who can teach struggling learners what they know and learn from each other as a means to build community.

My students need a document camera to share their problem solving and reasoning skills, lab techniques, and thinking.

By teaching others what they know, my students will become the owners of their learning.
