Students with Special Needs Learn the Life Skill of Cooking

My Project
Teaching cooking to students with disabilities is an opportunity to not only increase healthy nutrition and life skills, but also put basic academic skills to use in a functional way. The “Your Special Chef” Cooking class will give them the opportunity to work on life skills, reading skills, listening skills (e.g., one student can read the recipe and one can complete the steps), sequencing, nutrition, meal planning and math for measuring. It also is very motivating for them because typically they get to eat what they make! With the Special Chef Cooking Class students will learn there’s more to eat than just frozen meals and pizza!
When it comes to teaching students life skills, the most direct route may be through the stomach!
Life Skills take on a whole new life when combined with cooking projects. My students say they are more willing to try new healthful foods because the cooking and nutrition principles taught in the classroom become more relevant (and tasty too). Best of all, cooking in school can be a whole lot of fun! Students will have a choice of what to cook, which will make the cooking class more motivating. Since all students must maintain healthy nutrition and eating habits, teaching cooking to students with disabilities is an important step for them to be independent. Even students that are unable to eat regular textured food can learn how to blend their meals or make appropriate recipes!
Part of the Special Chef Cooking Club will be teaching students how to experiment with their own tastes and preferences. They will learn to use newer kitchen appliances such as an air fyer, food dehydrator, rice cooker and crock pot while learning math, reading and cooking skills.
