Do you remember being a child and seeing a student in a wheelchair or a student who was blind for the first time? Were you scared or curious? My students are diverse and I want to teach them about students with differing abilities so they will be sensitive to the students who look different.
My students are general and special education students that attend a Title I New York Public school.
Since I teach in an inclusive classroom, sometimes my general education students make fun of my students with disabilities. Although I do teach my students about the importance of being nice and about diversity, I do not have literacy resources to encourage understanding and knowledge of people with differing abilities.
My Project
I am requesting book sets that have paperback books that will immerse my students in learning about people with autism, blindness, asthma and more. These books have colorful images and engaging text that will help my students learn how people are different—and also the same! These books will help dispel stereotypes as students learn to understand and accept others.
This project will foster sensitivity and acceptance of people who may look and act different.
Most of my students do not have the opportunity at home to read these types of books, they are only able to do this in a classroom setting.
