My Students

My third grade students are eager to learn. They are curious, creative, and have great imaginations even though we are a Title I school in a high poverty neighborhood.

Our school is a Title I school and most of my students live in public housing which is why I need your help to help them thrive over this virtual time.

Their neighborhoods are rough and school is a place for them to be safe. My class is mostly African American children who face a lot of challenges.

My job, as a teacher, is to help them overcome these challenges and become the amazing adults I know they can become.

My Project

This project was inspired by watching the inauguration yesterday. After I watched Amanda Gorman, I realized how much poetry can be used to inspire my students to reach for the stars. I learned today that that young woman had a speech impediment and look what she accomplished.

Using Poetry books written by black authors will inspire my students!

Poetry comes in many forms and while I do own a lot of traditional poetry books written by white authors, I am lacking the diversity my students deserve. I want them to read books that celebrate who they are and show them what they can become.

I love my kids and in them I see the future presidents, doctors, lawyers, and hopefully with your help...future poets. As always I can't do this job without your help and I thank you so much for everything you have done.
