it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My high school students have a culturally responsive voice! They bring their real world trauma to my class everyday and want to express it with art. My high school students from the South Bronx who struggle with daily life, homelessness, broken homes, drug issues, gang issues, to name a few, want to express themselves and lack the funding to do so. They grow frustrated with having to create prints and transfer by hand (tedious process). In the era we live in, with so many social issues at the forefront in our society, our communities have taken it upon themselves to march, peacefully protest and denounce injustices using printmaking to make posters for these events.
Ours student bring these ideas to the classroom and want to have their voices heard by creating art that reflect these injustices and social issues.
Printmaking allows them to reproduce art and share at a rapid rate, but doing it by hand slows the process down, frustrates students and class time does not allow for more than 1-2 prints to help all students. Having a press would allow the students to reproduce their work more rapidly and share/exchange prints with their classmates.
