My Project
World travel is already inaccessible to many students, but with the cancellation of plans for travel abroad at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic stress that the pandemic has caused on students' families thereafter, travel has been even more challenging. Still, the students in my Spanish class are curious and adventurous; always eager to experience more from the different cultures we explore in class. They delight in doing cultural crafts and learning typical dances. During work time, they excitedly request Spanish-language songs that they've heard outside of class. I think of how much deeper their language proficiency is and how much richer their cultural competency could be if they had the opportunity to actually visit places in the Spanish-speaking world and beyond.
With the Quest 2 virtual reality headset, experiencing the whole world will be right within my students' reach, without the need to apply for a passport or even buy an airplane ticket.
They will be able to reflect on the differences and similarities between their home and places abroad. They will be able to practice giving directions, and describing clothing, buildings, food, natural phenomena, etc., all in the target language of our classroom, Spanish. They will be able to experience famous events like Spain's "Running of the Bulls" and reflect on the connections they can make with their other classes like history, geography, science, art, math, sociology, etc.
I have seen how much students are positively impacted by the experiences they have and how the language associated with those experiences seems to stick with them particularly well. The Quest 2 will help me bring students even more of these impactful experiences, promoting language acquisition and cultural competency.
