My Students
Life in isolation has long been a social issue for students with disabilities. Physical, behavioral, or sensory needs have limited the interaction with society. Students at my school on Staten Island have experienced what all of New York state is currently going through during the Covid-19 pandemic. For much of the 2019-2020 school year, the photography classes have been preparing for class trips and off-site experiences by learning camera operations and practicing through the windows, in the halls and in the schoolyard of the school. The course steered off direction when Governor Cuomo announced a shelter-in place for our state. While many of us adjust to our new lifestyle of social distancing, my students in the New York City Department of Education have something to share from their lifetime of experience. Their photography visually translates and defines what life at home is during this public health crisis. What’s discovered is just the opposite of what educators worried – transition. This remote learning project reveals that life without timed schedule, daily transitioning to and from school and a new system of evaluation presents opportunities for building connections with family and online community.
My Project
This remote learning project reveals a new opportunity that is accessibility. The images included in this exhibition document the transition from school to remote learning and illustrate the importance of community building and recognizing what evaluation within the school system is outlined as. We are free to create a new model of how students succeed and what failure may look like. This body of work inspires us to explore how we can accommodate and reconstruct our educational system to bring students of all abilities to achievement. Many of the students are non-verbal, use a device to communicate and/or have limited reading abilities with average IQ of less than 70. Photography levels the playing field allowing the students an outlet to express themselves.
