Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Seeing is believing! Seeing is LEARNING! That's one of the best ways my students learn. When they each have a living creature to care for and observe daily, they will learn about the fragility of life and the amazing miracles that occur in nature.
I have the pleasure of teaching a group of enthusiastic 2nd graders who have a thirst and excitement for scientific knowledge.
Their favorite subject is science and they find any opportunity to learn about the natural world around us. We are a K-5 school in Hollywood. Most of the students come from socio-economically disadvantaged, immigrant families.
My Project
Our class has been studying the life cycles of different animals. Our study began with a visit to the California Science Center where the students observed the larval and adult stages of ladybugs. We are now moving into studying the butterfly life cycle. The class set of Painted Lady larvae and learning materials would give each student the opportunity to personally care for, observe, and record the development of the butterfly. This first-hand experience will help the students internalize this concept and allow them to transfer that knowledge to other animal life cycles.
We all know that school budgets are getting smaller and unique learning opportunities like this one cost money.
My school cannot fund such a project, however small it may seem. I know I can't fund this project out-of-pocket either. I am sincerely hoping that I can get the funding, so that students can have a valuable, rich, learning experience that will stay in their memories for a lifetime.
