Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can we ask students to think critically when they don't have a clear view of the world? History books offer a different perspective on the world, help to build schema, and make it possible to accept new information in future reading and reading the world.

When presented with a reading on the Underground Railroad, my third graders were shocked that something like this "happened for real?!" After a class conversation my students were hungry for more.

They wanted to know what else happened long ago in the world and in our country. I work in a high poverty urban area in New York State. With materials being very limited, our libraries are scarce and I am unable to provide students with the valuable resources they are desperately seeking.

My Project

A comprehensive history section of my classroom library will help students to explore a new and exciting genre. It will show them different view points of the world and help students to create reading identities other than their current reading levels. When students are highly engaged in books they are able to do higher level thinking which can be guided towards critical thinking. When viewing books through a critical lens they will be able to explore issues such as power, race, and gender. They will be able to use this new lens to make sense of the world today, and how they fit into it.

When students are able to analyze and think critically they are able to come up with a plan for change.

This can be the first step towards students making proactive choices, taking ownership of their actions, and taking responsibility for their own lives.
