My Students
I work at an alternative high school in New York City where we strive to create a nurturing environment for non-traditional students whose needs haven't been met at other high schools. That means recognizing student strengths and talents, listening to their concerns and ideas, and providing them with a voice to promote lasting change.
Students deserve the opportunity to share their stories and turn those stories into actions that strengthen community.
After all, it is the youth who are directly impacted by our society's challenges who have the creativity and the drive to imagine solutions.
In addition to their drive and imagination, our students also have a profound understanding of their own experiences and extraordinary insight into the world around them. And their energy is the stuff that movements are made of.
My Project
Slay is a novel about a young 17-year-old girl who is a game designer. She uses gaming to escape into a world that resembles Wakanda, where she can truly be herself. She runs into obstacles along the way, including double consciousness and what it means to be Black, the intersectional struggles of being a young woman of color in a male-dominated medium, and the typical adolescent ups and downs of love and loss.
My students will be reading this novel in the fall and not only will the themes speak to them on a personal level, this project will also allow them to speak back to the author of this outstanding book.
With your help, my students could have the opportunity to sit and talk with Brittney Morris about her motivations and her methods behind creating Slay.
Though my students are familiar with the struggles that the main character of this book faces, they are unfamiliar with the magic of being able to discuss an author's work with them, face to face. Not only does it give them a voice to speak about some of their own issues to an author who can relate to them, but it also inspires students to think of themselves as authors as well. Viewing Brittney Morris as a real person will bring students closer to realizing the possibilities in their own dreams and aspirations.
