Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." We've all heard and maybe even said it before, but we know words often hurt more than actions. Some kids try to excuse their teasing (bullying) with the words "just kidding" but teasing is not excusable. Help us end the teasing.
Teaching my students to live every day as the best version of themselves is crucial.
The neighborhood they are growing up in is filled with negative influences and if I can build their self-confidence and empower them to stand up for the right thing now, they will be prepared to face peer pressure in middle school and continue on their individual journeys toward successful futures.
I teach in a Title I school with 96% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch program in an urban neighborhood. My students are amazing thinkers with great potential, but they are growing up in an area of high poverty and high crime. The school we spend our days in is filled with caring teachers who put their heart and soul into creating learning experiences for all students that will help them each reach their full potential. As a teacher here, we often spend large amounts of our personal money buying materials, including books for our classrooms.
My Project
The Townsend Press book, Bullying in Schools will be used to launch our anti-bullying project. It will be used to initiate discussions about respect and kindness after learning about bullying.
The iPad 2 is an amazing educational tool that expands the possibilities of what I can do with my students and more importantly it expands the possibilities of what they can do to impact their own learning. The iPad will also motivate them to do their best in other areas so they are able to use the technology. The educational apps that exist would support my students' growth as writers, readers, and mathematicians.
Initially, my students want to create a comic book that discusses all aspects of bullying, what it is, what to do if you see someone being bullied or are being bullied yourself as well as the harmful effects of bullying. The iPad would allow my students to modify the book to meet the needs of all students at our school...the Kindergarteners through fifth graders.
Please help my students impact the lives of every other student and teacher in our school with an iPad 2 and Bullying in Schools!
They are the future and if I can positively impact them as fifth graders, the future will be so much brighter for all of us.
