Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at our school organize bands and perform in public, both at on-campus events and off-campus as well. At least three of our current student bands have paid to play at clubs.

The way the pay-to-play format works isas follows: the students get 35 tickets to sell to their friends for at least$10 each.

On the night of the show, if the band hasn't raised $350, they don'tget to play. If they have raised $350, then they get to play, for free, minustheir donated labor and fundraising efforts. If they manage to convince theirfriends to pay more than $10 per ticket, they get to keep whatever is leftover. The students like playing at the Whisky, but they know they're being exploited.

My Project

We began planning our Financial Literacy for Musicians Workshop with the half-facetious title of How not to get ripped off by the Whisky a Go Go, since the Whisky is one of the clubs that our students have paid to play at. Several of our teachers play with bands in clubs, so they are both designing the workshop and planning presentations of their own, and we also intend to bring in working professionals such as booking agents and talent scouts to present their aspects of the music business.

It's bad that any professional musician has to deal with pay-to-play conditions, but it's worse for young people.

Not only do they have fewer resources than adults, but it's a sad introduction to growing up in a world that will treat them that way. Working conditions for artists may be dismal at times, but the informed can defend themselves better than the naive. Our students will be better able to negotiate for themselves with the financial literacy for musicians workshop.
