My Students
My third grade students are eager to learn. They are curious, creative, and have great imaginations even though we are a Title I school in a high poverty neighborhood.
Most of my students live in public housing which is why I need your help to help my students thrive over this virtual time due to Covid-19.
Their neighborhoods are rough and school is a place for them to be safe. My class is mostly African American children who face a lot of challenges.
My job, as a teacher, is to help my students overcome these challenges and become the amazing adults I know they can become.
My Project
To sum it up, this semester in my reading master's class we have been learning about how the illustrator plays an equal if not greater role than the author. My students are very artistic and love to draw. So I thought why not put together a collection of books illustrated by the top 5 African American illustrators; Kadir Nelson, Vashti Harrison, Javaka Steptoe, Floyd Cooper, and Daniel Minter.
These books are motivational and entertaining to read but also will show my students they could grow up to be a famous illustrator too.
Art is so important, and art and reading need to go hand in hand. I want my kids to realize how many choices there are out there for them in life. They love to draw and many are very talented and hopefully this collection of books will motivate them to want to be both an author and an illustrator.
