I teach 12 in a self-contained special education classroom. My students are ages 15-20. We work on all the usual subjects as well as vocation skills and life skills.
The diversity in my classroom is what makes me excited to go to work every day.
I have 2 graduates, 2 students who are deaf, a student who is blind and 3 students that are ELLs. This diversity has allowed my students to learn from one another and it brings about new possibilities and ideas every day.
My Project
I have a student who is visually impaired. Unfortunately, I do not have any books in braille or materials that he can use in a way that he is fully comfortable with. I want him to be able to read on his own during his free time. It would be great for him to have some choices of books to read.
I have a few students with unique voices, and I want them to be able to share this with one another.
Having these books would help my student be able to teach braille to the other students while also getting to enjoy information in a way that he is comfortable with. Having the braille playing cards will allow him to participate in social and free time in a way that is best for him.
More than half of students from low‑income households
