Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic, fun-loving, 14-15-year-olds. They love music and tend to be more engaged in a non-traditional classroom setting. Some of my kids hadn't picked up a book for leisure in years. The texts I teach are relevant and contemporary. One student asked me "Ms. Call when did they start writing books like this? I would read more if we had these kinds of books." I want them to keep this momentum going!

When students see themselves in books, the "windows and doors" begin opening to a world of endless knowledge.

We must rise to the occasion and support all readers to the best of our abilities. I am repeatedly asked if I can find them a certain book or if I can recommend them one. Teens need support and there are times when that support comes from a book. Support me in supporting them!

My Project

Students borrow books from our classroom library to find a place to go when life is less than ideal. They may read them at home, at lunch, or during class.

These books give kids a retreat from the harsh realities of life while teaching them real-world topics and how to successfully overcome hardships.

Our students face many challenges they may not feel comfortable talking to an adult about, They may feel less alone while reading stories of others like them. They have voiced their interest in serial killers, forensics, and LGBTQ+ materials.
