My Students
As an ESL teacher, I am extremely lucky to teach language arts, social students, and science to an incredibly motivated group of 6-8th graders. All of these students are refugees and come from Iran, Syria, Congo, Chad, Sudan, Nepal, Rwanda, and other countries. Some of these students have been in the US about a year while some only arrived a few months ago. I support these students both academically as well as socially as they navigate life in an American school.
My Project
I have given all of my ESL students writing utensils, composition notebooks, and folders. These simple school supplies are used in every class at our middle school; from fine arts and math to science, social studies, and language arts. My students, however, lack proper trapper keepers to house these supplies so they are often forgotten or misplaced. It is not uncommon for my students to arrive in class without something as simple as a pen or pencil, paper or the required textbook.
A trapper keeper will allow my students to house all of their school supplies together so they are always ready to learn!
Unfortunately, the cost keeps this simple organizational tool out of reach for my students. My extremely generous principal has given trappers to a few of my students, but I would love for each and every one of my students to have a trapper so they can be successful and ready to learn the moment they step into the classroom!
