My Project
Middle school is a time of great change in academic expectations, brain development, interpersonal relations, self image, and physical maturity. If a student's hygiene needs are not being met or things happen unexpectedly, their self esteem will tank. Regardless if peers say something hurtful, they will be stressed out and unable to participate freely or learn effectively.
I could use a little help restocking personal care drawers with feminine products, hair ties, and lip balm.
Although schools in our state offer free breakfast and lunch to all students, many live over 30 minutes from our school and do not arrive early enough for breakfast. Others eat the meals, but are growing teens and simply need more energy to stay late to attend clubs, tutor peers, complete schoolwork, receive help from teachers, or take home to eat later. We all know that young teens need enough food to be able to concentrate in class, play and push themselves to increase their fitness in PE class, and also keep their emotions and behavior in check. I am requesting a variety of satisfying nut and cereal bars for situations in which students simply need some energy.
The science department leads field trips at every grade level. Two grade levels attend field studies in coastal ecosystems during the rainy winter season. I think some inexpensive, reusable raincoats could make some students' windy, rainy trips (and the ride home) much more comfortable. The shy smiles, afterschool thank you visits, and notes make it clear that students appreciate the personal products, snacks, and the like because they know that we care about them.
