My Students
My third grade students are eager to learn. They are curious, creative, and have great imaginations even though we are a Title I school in a high poverty neighborhood.
Most of my students live in public housing which is why I need your help to help my students thrive over this virtual time due to Covid-19.
Their neighborhoods are rough and school is a place for them to be safe. My class is mostly African American children who face a lot of challenges.
My job, as a teacher, is to help my students overcome these challenges and become the amazing adults I know they can become.
My Project
This year we have been building our multicultural library due to the generosity of DonorsChoose donors. I am becoming a reading specialist and we are currently studying the danger of a single story. This means that students need to have several books about each culture that are authentic and positive.
According to my research, the books I have requested will help raise my students' self esteem and teach empathy for all cultures.
I watched a TED Talk recently that showed the power of a story. My students need books that are mirrors (represent them), books that are windows (show different cultures) and sliding doors (books that help them connect with other cultures).
Recently a lot of great books have been written, but I need your help to add these to our library. Every book you have given us in the past my students have loved. They are so excited each time we get a new book and I have seen growth because of your generosity. As always, thank you for your help and support.
