My Students
I am a second-year fourth grade teacher at an elementary school in Philadelphia. My class is comprised of 25 amazing students. I teach math and science and rotate with another fourth-grade class of 25 students including many ESOL and special education children. The majority of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. Many students come from very difficult home situations and are unable to purchase necessary school supplies to make learning effective. Your help is greatly appreciated!!
My Project
I have a lot of students with ADHD tendencies who have trouble focusing or sitting in their chair for long periods of time. I have discovered that my students love and benefit greatly from any activity I do where the students are activity engaged with hands-on materials. For example, earlier this year I found a box of clay in my desk drawer and allowed the students to create clay models of different landforms while watching a video about landforms. After the video, students chose their favorite landform and created it with clay, followed by a short writing assignment relating to landforms. I was disappointed when I took out the clay and one student asked, "What is clay?"
When the lesson is engaging and hands-on, ALL students are able to learn!
I am asking for more clay so I am able to do this lesson with my other class. I ran out of clay before I could teach all the students this lesson. I would also like to use more clay to model different science concepts throughout the school year.
I am asking for Elmer's glue so I can teach my students about solids, liquids, and gasses by creating their very own slime! It is a simple formula involving borax, glue, and water (I already have the borax, just need the glue)! My students loved this lesson last year and even went home to make their own.
Lastly, I am asking for bean bag chairs to have a comfortable area where students can do work independently. I plan to use these chairs as an incentive for positive behavior and quality work. Many of my students this year have expressed a passion for football, which is why I chose the football bean bags.
