My classroom is full of some of the brightest and most challenged 8th grade students you may ever meet. They walk into my Social Studies classroom to learn and be successful from a world that judges them based on where they are from. My students are welcoming and caring, and they soak up everything that is said, yet many of them go home to have no one ask them how their day was, no bed to sleep in, and no books to read. My school in composed of students that live in high poverty. Approximately 80% of our students are on free or reduced lunch, yet these conditions don't stop them.
As the economy continues to waver, my school and more so, my students, feel the effects. Our budget has seen the most dramatic decrease that I have ever heard of. Where other schools have a PTA to depend on to compensate their budget, our school's parents are struggling to work two or three jobs to get by and unfortunately cannot focus much time on the PTA or providing extra money to help us get supplies. I have 130 students, and I have been limited to making 1,000 copies until further notice. My students are spending endless amounts of time copying worksheets and articles. They are also sharing worksheets that I have given to them because I must have them for my remaining five classes.
To ensure that my students do not fall behind because of the budget issues and copy limits, I am requesting two printer cartridges to allow my students to print worksheets, projects, and whatever other resources they might need to succeed in my classroom. With such limited time with my students, printer cartridges would allow each of my students to have their own worksheets and keep their worksheets for reference.
Although this is a simple request, the donation of two printer cartridges to my classroom will be used daily, in each class, for the benefit of every student. Students need their own worksheets and articles to make notes on, circle/highlight, and to reflect. With all of the issues that my students face at school and at home, please help me by not adding the budget constraints to their list. Help my students have their own worksheets! They need ink to keep them thinking!
