Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students want to learn more about the ecology of our urban environment and need a set of great field guides to help them. Our school is an environmental high school with a young research program. I am trying to strengthen this research program and support our students entrance to our local science fair competition. I work with the sophomore class on developing projects related to the urban environment. Skills obtained in my course include many research techniques that will serve our students in their futures including using dichotomous keys, reading primary literature, sampling methods, developing hypotheses and statistical analysis.
We are developing an urban environmental research program and we need help supporting our student research projects. Our class is working on studying the ecology of an urban park looking at the birds, insects, reptiles, vegetation, wildlife and water quality. In order to complete their projects and support the development of their research skills, we need to set up field kits for their different projects. As part of every field kit, a local field guide is imperative.
When we go out into the field we need to be prepared with field guides. Our field guides need to be specific to our region and area of interest. The National Audubon Society Field Guide Set is for North America and includes a collection of guides for insects and spiders, butterflies, trees, wildflowers, mammals, birds and many more. For our first data collection we are going to sample an urban area for species richness looking at the invertebrates, birds, reptiles, vegetation and mammals. After completing this initial survey, students will have the skills to expand their projects into their local communities studying biodiversity and species richness in their own backyards. Students will ask questions, collect and analyze data and present their findings at a science fair, activities that will strengthen their critical thinking skills.
With your help these students will be exposed to a unique and powerful field research opportunity. Their curiosity will be peaked and their world's expanded as they learn to explore their surroundings in a critical way.
