This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We want to purchase soil, pots, and seeds for an end of the year project. We will be teaching students about how important plants are for life on Earth. We will go over how plants make oxygen, clean water, store water, store carbon dioxide, are the base of the food web, and play an essential role in the biogeochemical cycles. We will tie this back in with Earth Day and talk about the significance of Earth Day and how students can lower their ecological footprint and help protect the environment.

We plan to give out vegetable seeds and seed starter pots so that students can grow healthy food options which are important for their growing bodies and minds.

We also plan to give each student a bag of seeds that they can bring home to plant for pollinators. We are hoping to help increase bee and butterfly populations because we know they are currently in decline due to human impact. One teacher currently has mature spider plants that have several baby spider plants that can be cut off. There are enough to plant about 25 baby plants in small pots so that students who want to can take one home. Spider plants are great because they are easy to take care of and they are one of the best plants for cleaning air. They absorb VOCs which are a common air pollutant found in homes.

We also need earbuds to give to students who do not own a pair so that they can complete their independent work online. Once we have given out all the earbuds, we will need the headphones for students to borrow. We want to provide our students with engaging learning experiences that appeal to their curiosity and help them understand how important plants are.
