Access to engaging, accessible books in a classroom library can support the development of a lifelong reader. If classroom libraries are filled with texts that invite students, they are more than likely to dramatically increase their reading enjoyment and stamina throughout the school year. The same is for books at home. With distance learning as the model for this school year, it is now more important than ever that students have engaging at home libraries.
First and second grades are the foundational years in which students build on their literacy learning and learn to efficiently read and comprehend longer, more complex texts.
The most effective reading instruction comes with plenty of time for students to practice their literacy skills in engaging ways. My students need to have opportunities to practice daily that support their development as readers, especially from home. Equally important is that they have access to a wide range of books that they can relate to and get excited to read.
My Project
Learning to read is a pivotal part of the early elementary school years. A big piece of supporting independent readers is providing access to engaging texts. In my classroom I am able to do this with an extensive classroom library. However, when my students are learning from home they do not have access to these texts. My project supports this by creating sets of take-home library books for my students to "check-out" on a regular basis.
My readers will use the leveled texts as they practice and learn how to read at home.
When they are finished with one set of texts they will be able to safely return them and check-out a new set to support their growth as readers. The sets of texts will gradually increase in complexity so that no matter their reading level or interest, my students will have access to books to read.
