My students need an Osmo interactive gaming system, 3D doodle pen (precursor to 3D printer), cardstock and masking tape for engineering, and CDs with yarn for crafting.

My Students
Teamwork, cooperation, passionate play...these are just some of the words I would use to describe my students on a makerspace day in the library media center. Words I hear during these library/media class days: "Ms. Ehll, look what I/we did!" "Ms. Ehll, will you take a picture?!"
My kindergarten through 5th grade students are ready to explore the world of creativity and imagination.
They have proven this to me time and time again when we have a makerspace class. Their excitement during those classes fills the room and my heart. They dive right in and work with each other on projects proving to me they are ready for the next step in makerspace innovation. Many times I offer the first exposure my students have to technology or creating with objects.
My Project
Typically, during makerspace classes we have centers or stations. This means students get to experience a "maker" task for 10 minutes, then move on to another.
The plan is to increase my students' hands-on experience with the iPad by using Osmo. They've managed to use it for eBooks and coding, so they are ready to take it to the next level and use manipulatives to see it as a hands-on educational gaming device.
The 3D pen is to train students in the basics of brainstorm, design, and planning. The hope is that the 3D pen will lead them to confidence in their own imagination which will come to fruition with their designs. The goal is for them to be ready to use a 3D printer by next school year.
The yarn and CDs are to create art out of everyday objects which is the epitome of a makerspace.
The cardstock and masking tape are for older students to team up and engineer marble roller coasters that require planning, trial and error, and perseverance.
I love that my students see the library media center as more than just a place to get books.
They have used all the makerspace resources I've provided to them so far with increasing skill, and they have proven they are ready to move on to other creative challenges. Many students have come out of their shell in library during "maker" time because they have found a strength they didn't realize existed. Students have increased perseverance and teamwork while using items to make.
