Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

In the fall, we're starting an independent reading initiative in English classes. I want to give students access to high quality, high interest titles like Manga so that they will be engaged with the initiative.

My students attend a public urban high school that is 64 percent low income.

My Project

Students love Manga series, but they are very expensive to keep stocked in the library. Manga books can be the gateway to students who are reluctant readers getting invested in reading for pleasure. We are starting a school-wide independent reading initiative through English classes in our school. The more options we have of engaging titles, the more likely students will be excited about reading in their classes. I'm hoping that by adding these Manga series to our collection that students will be motivated to read and explore the resources we have for them in our school library.
