This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students have experienced challenges with reading for many years. The majority of my students have lost the passion for reading due to their exceptionalities and loss of confidence. In order to boost the morale and a passion for reading, I want to implement community service peer reading program where stronger readers are able to mentor others who struggle with reading fluency and comprehension.
To accomplish this goal, I have selected books that students are able to identify with due to similar life challenges encountered by the characters, my students, and others in their families and/or communities.
Upon finishing reading the novels, my students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their reading experiences, abilities, confidence, and contribution to other readers. Students who have overcome challenges with reading will be given the opportunity to read to emerging readers in the school, their families, and others in their communities. They may also partner with our school's pre-school program and read to them. Such efforts will allow my students to begin a cycle of giving back by linking others to literacy.
