Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students want to run a hydroponic garden system to grow fresh fruits and vegetables for our school community.

We are learning about food deserts across Los Angeles and how they impact our local community, especially regarding the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Chemistry students have also been learning the science behind fertilizers and what nutrients plants need to grow, while biology students are discovering ecosystems and the ways in which plants receive energy and resources from around them.

Chemistry students will manage the concentration of fertilizers and water in the system. Biology students will determine which plants would be most useful to grow, and be responsible for harvesting and sharing them with our school community.

Over 75% of our school community qualifies for free or reduced lunch, and we are a commuter school in which most students bus in from the inner city. This means that most students live farther away from fresh sustainable produce.

These hydroponic garden kits would allow my students to learn how to plant edible produce (even without access to a garden space) and share the produce with the school community, increasing access to fresh foods.

As a class, students hope to put their combined learning together to learn how to grow fresh produce indoors that they can pass out to families and other students in our school.
