Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bright and inquisitive young learners. More than half come from low-income families. They face a variety of challenges. They have different abilities, personalities, and achievement levels. Some also have special needs.
I want all my students to be comfortable in the classroom environment, so they feel safe to take risks, face challenges, and grow.
They are excited about the school year and are open to learning new habits. They are a joy to be around and are an amazing bunch of kids!
My Project
At G.W.C. Elementary, our vision includes preparing students for global success in an ever-changing world with an academically challenging and rigorous curriculum to ensure student achievement. But we don't stop there! We also look to foster students' personal growth for success in a global society.
This, my very first project on DonorsChoose.org, is an effort to improve my students' emotional and mental wellbeing by encouraging them to recognize and understand their emotions, feel comfortable despite differences, and give them practical skills to be kind to themselves and to others.
My students need these books about feelings, emotions, and positive self-image to enable them to learn the power of positive thinking, belief in themselves, and kindness towards others.
These skills can help students, not only in second grade, but throughout their lives! Research supports the idea of teaching such skills as naming and expressing emotions and regulating self as having a positive effect on students academically and socially. Yale researchers, Brackett and Rivers cite studies showing that students, "are more likely to flourish when in settings that address their social and emotional needs, such as experiencing meaningful relationships, having confidence in their abilities, and feeling autonomous {and that} students are more likely to thrive in classrooms that foster meaningful, caring, safe, and empowering interactions." This research was recommended by the Born This Way Foundation, which will match all donations to this project!
My students are amazing and they deserve a caring environment which allows them to experience kindness and self-confidence. Some of my students, as is true in many American classrooms, have special needs or labels which allow them to qualify for extra support. I want my students to experience childhood free from any stigma of having such labels. I want them to feel comfortable with themselves and each other and to simply experience the joys of reading, playing, learning, and growing!
