My Students

We are a middle school and high school that provides quality and rigorous individualized educational programs to students with significant challenges and diverse learning styles in a variety of settings that nurture independence, ensure dignity, and support integration into the community.

In our district, self-contained setting, these students require a large number of staff assistance.

This year, I have switched to remote learning with a class of 7 students with Autism. I teach them ELA, Math, and Art.

They have emerging verbal skills or are non-verbal and use the assistance of communication device technology. In addition, the literacy skill level is emerging yet they are in high school. There are also students who are non-readers. They are a diverse group with highly individual needs. The one thread that connects their abilities and interests is automation. They all respond very well to all types of electronic devices.

I have been using photography as a tool to level the playing field in that it builds self-confidence and allows the kids to develop job readiness skills, express themselves in new ways and present their work to the community at large. The program is specifically designed to meet their special needs.

My Project

My students will be learning about weather in the ELA curriculum. This curriculum is by Unique Learning Systems, specifically designed to their unique needs. Simultaneously, I will be participating in a group cohort program for embedding literacy strategies in science. I will be looking at lesson plans and reflecting with a group of teachers as a professional development opportunity. These supplies will support the effort.

I plan to create charts, printable visual supports and create manipulatives to support the unit, as well as, my student's IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals.

They will be performing tasks and activities such as sequencing steps for paraphrasing, answering questions about the main idea and key details and expanding vocabulary. I will also perform interactive read-alouds.
