Help me give my students the tools they need in order to become successful active readers! We need cleaning supplies, tissues, printer ink, folders, and notebooks.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Dr. Seuss once said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This quote, albeit initially intended for younger children, resonates with all children (and students) in my experience. As a dual-certified English and Special Education teacher for the past 13 years, I have always focused my attempts at student achievement around reading, as I believe that reading is the basis of almost all learning.
I have finally found an approach to teaching reading that works and have seen the results in student achievement in a short period.
While students read, they utilize the "Double Journal Entry" strategy to activate their two reading voices (their reading voice and their thinking voice). The supplies I have requested will help facilitate active reading.
Each student will receive a notebook where they can record their interactions with the text. They will also receive a folder where they can store supplemental handouts that aid in the reading process. Pencils are needed for obvious reasons, as well as basic everyday supplies that students constantly voice that they need. I'm especially excited about the CUBES, where I will utilize dry-erase markers to write text-specific questions that students will discuss, adding to engagement in the reading process. The other supplies in this project (cleaning supplies, tissues, printer ink etc.) are things that students need in order to feel comfortable, safe, and supported in class.
