My Students
My first year of teaching has been an adventure of ups and downs. I was constantly warned away from taking a job in teaching, especially teaching in an under-served, urban school. This fear was worsened when I started reading some statistics that came from my school district. My students have proven all of these accusations wrong. They are bright, energetic, and thoughtful through and through.
What my students need is a chance to be themselves without the pressure of a classroom environment.
They approached me about creating a video game club. A place where they could hang out, play social games, hold friendly competitions, and build a community around their passions.
My Project
Working in an inner-city school with students who face daily struggles, I know that all they need is a place and time to relax. My students reached out to me at the beginning of the school year to create a safe space that they can stay after school and participate in their greatest passion, video games. While video games may seem counterintuitive in a school setting, there are many benefits. Students can build a community in and out of the school while hosting fundraising campaigns that could reach a national level, for instance!
Most importantly, students need a safe place to relax and enjoy the company of their peers without the pressure of their everyday lives.
We also have a goal to create an esports team that will have similar academic requirements as any physical sports team, which will give struggling students an incentive to do well and seek help when needed!
To this end, I am asking for a Nintendo Switch and some party games to get us started. These resources will offer my students a chance to engage with each other using nonviolent video games and friendly competition! Some of the games even have cooperative play modes to help students learn to work together towards a common interest.
