I am a special education teacher, in Illinois, who teaches in an alternative high school for individuals who are emotional disturbed (ED). Some of my students are also individuals with learning disabilities (LD). The subject that I primarily teach is mathematics.
The range of ages and abilities per class cover an extremely wide spectrum of ability levels and course work. I easily teach three different math subjects per period. As I make my rounds through the various classes, I have started implementing more technology into the classroom to insure that all students have some kind of individual attention and resources to turn to. I am currently teaching some of my classes with the use of various websites and power points, to insure that students have a solid understanding of concepts and mathematical procedures, as well as incorporating technology in the classroom and trying to teach math from a technological approach as well as the good old fashioned pencil and paper approach. I have had some success with my students using this method. Not only does it insure that I am covering all the material with each student, but also individualizes instruction for each student. I currently have three computers in my classroom; however, I believe that if there were more computers in my classroom, more students would have access to the use of these mathematical programs and websites and a larger amount of students would achieve higher levels of success in math.
My students would love a class set of computers, which would consist of ten more computers; however, I would appreciate starting with the addition of one more computer. My students have had a great deal of success with the technology that has been implemented in the class already, and I believe that if the number of computers slowly grew in our classroom, students would continue to succeed in the subject of math.
Your help will not only ensure that my students have a solid background in mathematics, but also you will make it possible for each one of my students receive the individual instruction that they require.
