My students need 17 different books written by Dr. Seuss.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. G.'s classroom raised $304
This project is fully funded
As a fourth grade teacher in an inner-city school in New York, I am 100% committed to instilling a love of reading in my students. Many educators and parents have found that series like "Harry Potter" and "Lemony Snicket" help foster a passion for reading in their children. However, in my fourth grade classroom, I find that this is not always the case. I find that these series, at least during the first half of the year, are simply at too high a level for my students. Most of my students are 1 and 2 years behind grade level in their reading abilities.
In order to foster an enthusiasm towards reading in my students, I need books in my classroom that are both interesting and better suited to their reading levels. Initially, I spent hours on the Internet, trying to find "new" and "modern" books that would engage these children. It wasn't until I had the opportunity to visit a fellow teacher's classroom that I realized that the best books for my students hadn't just been written - they were the beloved Dr. Seuss classics!
Dr. Seuss has been a favorite of children for generations. I remember reading "Horton Hears a Hoo" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" cover to cover again and again as a child. I was captivated by his rhymes and his ability to make every situation and experience a learning one. When I graduated from college, I received "Oh the Places You Will Go," and this is the same book I read to my students every year on the first day of school. The books created by Dr. Seuss are filled with detailed, exciting, and vivid pictures that captivate children immediately. His rhymes and his lyricism holds their attention and even helps to make them better readers. Having many Dr. Seuss books in the classroom will help me to excite and interest struggling students.
Your donation will help me to reach out to and support the struggling students in my classroom while also helping to reinforce good reading skills in students who are already proficient readers. This donation will aid me in helping to close the achievement gap that my students face everyday.
Thank you.
