Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a school that is represented by a diverse population of students and staff. Seventy-five percent of our students are English Language Learners, mostly Latinos, growing through real-life and hands-on experiences. We have many strong community partnerships that help support and nurture our youth. We focus on meeting the needs of our families through a variety of family events and community outreach opportunities. The goal at my school is to promote parental involvement in our school in order to inform, engage, and create a strong partnership between school and the home, which will lead to a stronger, healthier community.
Most students in my school live below the poverty level; they receive free school meals and reside in subsidized housing.
Most students have not experienced the joy of private lessons, travel sports teams, or new equipment. They still find fun and excitement through activities, teamwork, encouragement and human interaction. To receive the donation of new equipment would bring tremendous happiness to these children, and reinforce to them the principle that all children are valuable and can enjoy the same opportunities in life.
My Project
I believe that Physical Education is a helpful and beneficial gateway for all students to develop habits that will be instrumental in promoting a healthy future. A student can apply the cognitive knowledge about a skill to correctly perform that skill; this can lead to improved performance and life long enjoyment of that activity. Through use of the footballs, soccer balls, and volleyballs that have been requested, students can develop new physical skills as a foundation for healthy habits and an enjoyment of sports and recreational activities.
Sports also facilitates social interaction and emphasizes the importance of good sportsmanship and teamwork.
These attributes are so important and it is crucial to be exposed to them and develop them at a young age. With the epidemic of obesity, especially childhood obesity, the benefits of cognitive knowledge and physical skills are becoming more and more important at the elementary level.
Physical Education is a vital part of the curriculum; this may be the first exposure of young children to the importance of healthy lifestyle habits and physical activity. I am confident that students will benefit greatly through the use of this equipment, both now and as a foundation for a healthier future!
